It also found a satellite of the European Space Agency with which communication had been lost in 1998. This meant that it could resume its mission and data was received from this up to 2003.

The Arecibo Message

Although the Observatory is not concerned with finding extra-terrestrial life forms as SETI is, it has beamed a message into space.

In 1974 the Observatory celebrated the update to its equipment by transmitting a message to a star cluster known as M13, 25,000 light years away from Earth. This was a message in a binary string put together by the scientists Frank Drake and Carl Sagan (the latter successfully popularized science through his television series).

If the message is eventually received and deciphered, an alien civilization would have an image of a human being, one of the actual telescope which beamed the message to it, the DNA of humans and an image of the solar system.
